Regency - Early Victorian Amethyst Heraldic Seal Fob, c.1825–40

£325.00

An enchanting antique fob, alive with all the quiet poetry and craftsmanship of a bygone age. This beautifully modelled piece features a polished amethyst seal, its soft violet depths hand-carved with the heraldic figure of a lion sejant - an age-old emblem of courage, guardianship and noble resolve. A reminder of Shakespeare’s line, “The violet’s scent, yet more than violet’s hue,” for here the stone’s delicate colour is matched by the refinement of its engraving.

The amethyst face measures 16 x 13mm and is framed in a warm gold mount, gently worn by time. The body of the fob is an exuberant study in Rococo ornamentation: scrolling foliage, floral forms and a sculpted finial, all worked in richly detailed relief. It is a piece that feels wonderfully tactile in the hand, its 5.5 grams lending just the right sense of presence without heaviness.

The complete drop of the fob is 25.5mm, making it a perfect companion for a watch chain, chatelaine, or - as so many of my clients delight in doing - worn as a pendant. Elegant, evocative, and unmistakably historic, this fob carries with it the romance of correspondence sealed by candlelight and the enduring charm of Georgian artistry.
