Late Victorian 9ct Gold Amethyst, Peridot & Pearl Pendant in the Suffragette Colours
A jewel of quiet poetry from the twilight of the Victorian age, this graceful pendant bears the Chester hallmark for 1891 and is crafted in 9 carat gold, delicately set with amethyst, seed pearls, and a drop of fresh green peridot.
Its softly curving form, all loops and tendrils, speaks of the emerging Art Nouveau sensibility - that lyrical style which drew its inspiration from nature’s own flowing lines. The combination of violet, white and green would later become famous as the palette of the Suffragette movement (“Give Women Votes”), yet this piece predates that association by over a decade. It is, therefore, a charming forerunner - a jewel of its time, but with a whisper of what was to come.
Hallmarked for Chester 1891, a mark now long since retired, it offers both historical interest and a timeless feminine elegance. Perfect worn on a fine gold chain at the throat, or pinned to silk for that touch of romantic colour.
“The past is not dead. It is not even past.” — William Faulkner
