Antique 18ct Gold Ruby & Diamond Crescent Moon Pendant
Few motifs capture late Victorian jewellery quite like the crescent moon. Romantic without being overly sentimental, celestial without trying too hard - and endlessly wearable over a century later. During the Victorian era, crescent moons symbolised change, femininity, and new beginnings, which perhaps explains why they became such enduring favourites in fine jewellery of the period.
This particular example began life as a brooch and has since been professionally converted into a pendant by my goldsmith, giving it a far more wearable second chapter whilst preserving all the charm of the original piece. The softly scalloped crescent is set with alternating old-cut diamonds and rich raspberry-toned rubies, each stone individually hand set in the wonderfully slightly irregular way only antique jewellery ever seems to achieve.
The diamonds are bright and lively, catching the light beautifully against the deeper ruby tones, whilst the generous scale gives the piece real presence when worn. At 28mm across, this is not a tiny token crescent destined to disappear on a chain - it has exactly the sort of scale that makes antique jewellery feel relevant and luxurious today.
Crafted in 18ct gold throughout, including the later conversion work, this is the sort of heirloom piece that looks equally at home layered with modern chains or worn entirely on its own.
