This fine antique ring, crafted in 18ct yellow gold, exemplifies the enduring popularity of the half-hoop design so characteristic of the Victorian period. Set with alternating rubies and an old-cut diamond, its arrangement speaks both to balance in composition and to the symbolic associations of the gemstones themselves.
The ring is set with five stones in graduated formation: three round-cut rubies of a rich pinkish-red hue interspersed with two old mine-cut diamonds. The diamonds, hand-faceted and cushion-shaped, display the broader facets and slightly asymmetrical geometry characteristic of cutting techniques prior to the advent of the modern brilliant in the early 20th century. Their softer scintillation is complemented by the saturated warmth of the rubies, a pairing highly favoured in late Victorian design.
The pierced gallery, composed of finely executed scrolling openwork, is emblematic of the period’s shift away from heavier, closed-back Georgian settings towards mounts that combined structural delicacy with aesthetic refinement. Such craftsmanship required considerable technical skill, as the open fretwork had to preserve both the visual lightness and the strength necessary to secure the stones.
A truly romantic piece of jewellery, perfect worn on its own or as part of an elegant stack.
